This term we have been learning about how are interactions with the environment can be positive and negative. Lisa Bond from Whale Watch taught us about ghost nets, plastic bags, toxic waste, bottle tops and other harmful interactions in our ocean. She showed us some movies showing the different areas of the ocean where animals live.
Last term James invited Colin King to come and visit us and talk to us about his leadership role as the MP for Kaikoura. He was able to come his term.
HEY TREES
Your beautiful singing takes my breath away.
I like that .
HEY ROCKS
Your lovely, bright sparkling eyes makes me happy when I’m sad.
I like that.
HEY SKY
Your gleeful characters dance and sway throughout my day making me laugh.
I like that.
HEY MOUNTAINS
Your chilly white snow swallows me every time I walk on you.
I like that.
HEY BUILDINGS
Your beautiful structures sway side to side catching my eyes, making me smile
I like that.

Here goes! My first effort at creating a class blog! I hope to get the children to blog moving forward but our mornings are very, very busy and I am always mindful that the children will gain the most from time spent reading, writing and doing maths.
We welcome SoHee to our class. SoHee has lived in New Zealand for 3 years and has recently moved to Kaikoura. She has all ready become a great role model for the rest of the team with her high standard of work. Well Done, SoHee!
Well, what a wet week, again! I am very proud of how our team coped with wet intervals and lunchtimes and the wonderful ‘I Spy’ puzzle that was put together, the construction with the blocks and the many card games that the children played.
This week we have completed acrostic poems on our environment – ‘Kaikoura.’ Each line starts with a letter from the name – Kaikoura.
Here is Zoe’s Poem
Kaikoura, I love it
Albatross flying
Ice on the mountain
Koura in rock pools
Octopus swimming
Under the sea
Rock pool full of water

The other excitement at Suburban this week is the number of waxeyes that are enjoying eating the bird balls that we made last week. I am not sure if there will be any left when we return from the weekend. It is fantastic to see what a difference we have made to our environment by providing our beautiful birds with food. Previously, we rarely saw the birds in our trees. I have attached a photo.
Well what a week! We have a lot of beautiful Wax Eyes around the school enjoying our Bird Balls.
Noah is our Reader of the Week this week.
Holly is our Math Whiz she is able to give directions using half and quarter turns.
Haruka has shown Whenua this week so he is looking after Theodore.
We looked at the food in our lunch boxes to find out what countries our food has traveled from. We had food from Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Fiji, America, Australia and New Zealand. We identified positive and negative effects relating to this.
We have had a fantastic first week back after the holidays. The temperature drop made me wish I was back in Fiji. Mr Manawatu came and told us a lot of stories about the history of our Kaikoura environment this week as our topic this term is Environment.
Our reader of the week this week was Holly.
In Maths we have been learning about position and movement, Laila is our Math Whiz this week.
This terms value we are focusing on is Whenua which is about caring for our environment, Cole demonstrated Whenua this week and has taken Theodore home for an adventure.
Todays MVP (Most Valuable Player) is Yuma.
We made bird balls with the senior class and have hung them in trees around the school to give our birds extra food during winter.
