What a fantastic start to the year we have with a sea of smiles from our special Fyffe Force Learners.
We are extremely fortunate to have Olivia with us in Room 2 and thanks for the tremendous amount of time and energy you’ve spent setting up your room. We also welcome Maddison and Hannah and we hope you all enjoy your time with us.
Last week the Year 6 students spent time reflecting on their time at Kaikoura Suburban School as learners and looked at their opportunities with the time they have left this year while they attached and raised the school flag. This flag is very symbolic as it sits high and proud above us monitoring and enjoying the journey our learners have and will take in the future.
Over the next 3 years the school Professional Development is based around the programme ‘Assess to Learn’ (AtoL). This will involve advisors visiting our school and classrooms, release for staff, weekends for whole school professional development and at least one Teacher Only Day.
Our first visit is in Week 5 where we will be discussing our school needs. We are happy to be extending our knowledge further in this field, which will lead changes to assessment, reporting and communicating with our learners and their families.
I have chosen to submit this article for those families that may have missed the ‘Education Page’ on 21 January 2009. Any enquiries please contact the school by emailing, phoning or visiting.
Kaikoura Suburban School is a dynamic, future focused school, teaching
and delivering programmes suited for our learners as they venture forward into the 21st century.
Last year we identified some important attributes that we believe our students need to attain to become life long learners.
This journey started by connecting the required Key Competencies from the New Zealand Curriculum – Thinking, Managing Self, Participating and Contributing, Relating to Others, and Using Language, Symbols and Texts to our acronym ‘Fyffe Force Learners.’
Fyffe connects us with the dynamic image we look up to every day – Mt Fyffe – Kaiterau
Force is teased out to connect our learners with what we believe are the important skills needed linking with the Key Competencies mentioned above.
F = Fun
O = Organised
R = Respect
C = Communication
E = Excellence.
Therefore our goal as a school community is to develop our learners
with the above attributes through involvement with our local environment and innovated and future focused educational programmes.
We believe our students and their ‘backpacks’ will then be complete for them to become life long learners.
Our school offers 3 small classes where the students undertake Literacy and Numeracy and then in the afternoons they are arranged into 2 groups for Inquiry/Topic and Physical Activity. This allows the Principal release for management.
