Kaikoura Whale Watch

August 31, 2011 - 12:28 pm No Comments

On Monday the 29 of August 2011 the Year 4′s and 5′s from Kaikoura Suburban School went on Kaikoura Whale Watch with the Kaikoura Primary School children.

Firstly, we met at the railway station.

Next we went inside and watched a movie about safety on the boat. The boat we went was called Tahoura.

Soon we went on the bus to the boat and got our life jackets on.

After we were all seated on the boat we started steaming out of the marina and Andrea (the lady who was talking to us) started showing us photos of whales and dolphins.

Then we stopped and a crew member went out to listen for a clicking sound with a sounder.  He heard a whale so we raced and saw it.
The whale’s tail was an amazing sight to see.

Then we moved on to see millions of dolphins swimming all around the boat.

On the way back it was fun because we got to watch a movie about whales but it was a very, very long trip back.

It was a great trip and I really enjoyed it.

I hope I get to go on it again.

My amazing Whale Watch trip

August 31, 2011 - 12:22 pm 2 Comments

On Monday 29th of August the Year 4′s and Year 5′s from Kaikoura Suburban School went on a whale watch trip.

First we watched a safety movie so that we were safe.

Next we got on a bus and I sat next to my dad.

Then we got on the boat, I chose a seat to sit on. Then the boat started to move away from shore. Andrea introduced her name to the kids, parents and teachers.
Andrea taught us about whales and what they eat.

Soon we got to go outside the boat. I saw a whale, it dived and I saw its tail, it was beautiful. Then we had to go inside.

Later we saw a big pod of Dusky Dolphins. We got to go outside and see them up close.

Unfortunately lots of people and I got sea sick.

Finally we went to shore. It was fun to see the whales. I learnt that whales eat squid, whales can dive for 45 minutes
and whales make a clicking sound with their noses and an echoing sound to catch their prey.

Thankyou to Kaikoura Whale Watch for letting Kaikoura Suburban School come go on the Whale Watch trip. I think it was a great experience for my first time and I would recommend it to everyone.

Rippa Rugby World Cup 2011

August 27, 2011 - 11:59 pm 1 Comment

Wow what a day!

During the last two days, each class learnt about a country from New Zealand’s Rugby World Cup Pool.

Students sampled the language, culture, costume, national anthems, songs, species and a huge array of delicious food.

Students and the community then celebrated in style with the opening ceremony of the Rippa Rugby World Cup 2011. The New Zealand national anthem was sung followed by each team marching to their countries national anthem.  Six teams entered our World Cup (Canada, Tonga, Japan, France, Australia and South Africa). Each team played the others in five rounds, with games lasting 10 minutes each.

Every student participated displaying the Force and key competencies to make the day a huge success. Congratulations – you are all winners!

There were some tense moments with teams determined to win and the crowd went wild ……..

Evaporation and Explanation

August 24, 2011 - 4:38 pm No Comments

The Keas have been learning to write explanations. We have also been learning about the water cycle. This week we did an experiment to find out about evaporation. We placed a wet hand print onto a paper towel then drew around it with a felt pen then hung it on a line in the classroom. After this we made some predictions about what would happen to our handprint.

Logan – The hand print might get bigger and take over the whole page.

Mya – The hand print might change colour and get smaller.

Eli – The hand print will get hard.

Alexander – Water might dry out and the print will stay there.

Jacob – It will stay soggy. If it’s a windy day the water will drop on the floor.

Blake – Water will come out of the hand print. Water will go on the floor even though it is not dripping.

Seth – It would dry up.

Jak – It would stay soggy.

Emma – The colour would change shape after using the pen.

Alex F – It would dry up.

Brandon – It would spread out more.

We then wrote some explanations about our experiment and what we found out.

Here are three for you to read.

We had a paper towel. We had to put our hand in the bucket and we put out hand on to the paper towel. We had to write out name on the paper towel. I drew around my hand and the paper towel dried. Heat made my hand dry. The hands are dried now. The water has evaporated.  By Emma

On Tuesday morning I made a hand print on a paper towel. Next I put my name on the paper towel. Thirdly, I put my hand into a cold bucket of water which felt as cold as an ice cube. Then I put my sub-zero hand on the paper towel. It looked like bulls horns. Finally the water evaporated into the warm invisible air. It became a gas. By Jacob

August 14, 2011 - 8:37 pm No Comments

Congratulations Shearwaters!

Shearwaters have written a book to show their learning about Planet Earth and Beyond. It is a great narrative and explanation text about their imaginary microscopic creature named after Shearwaters Class at Kaikoura Suburban School.

The class have also recorded the book on Little Bird Tales website. So sit back, relax and click on the link.

Enjoy!
