Snails

The Keas have been investigating snails this term. We have an aquarium with snails and slugs in it so we have been observing them with our magnifying glasses. We have looked at You Tube clips of snails laying eggs and we have seen them munching away on lettuce with their hundreds of teeth on their tongues.

Sustaining You Display at Kaikoura District Library

Shearwater class have met their deadline to display their art and literacy learning for the entire Kaikoura community to enjoy and learn from.

The life size models, symbols books and images are on display for all to view from Thursday 17th – Wednesday 23rd May.

The students have also created a survey to find out if they have actually been effective in helping the community to become healthier.

Fun times with tools & gear

We are getting prepared for the winter months by introducing some new things to do. We have got some old broken down gear that we’re allowed to pull apart to get a closer look at all the interesting things inside.
“I have got it fully apart,” Hamish explained!
“I love these silvery, wired pieces that must relay information,” Steffi told us.
“I need to use the Phillips head. May I please?” asked Hannah.

The conversation and the learning was very cool in the short time I snuck over to get these photos.
The gear has been checked over by an electrician and all safe. The children have been asked to ‘manage self’ while playing as there will be sharp pieces. If any one has any old things they don’t mind been pulled apart and that doesn’t include any oil or grease then we would love to see them.

Soldiers, ready and march….

Last Thursday the Pukeko class had an interesting experience during their Anzac visit. They dressed up as soldiers, handled some of the gear the soldiers used from the various wars and watched some pretty graphic footage. The whole experience was extremely compelling and horrific. John and Rod certainly made it feel as real as possible and by the end of the session we certainly began to imagine some of the horror our heros must have had to content with.

Pet Club Begins!

We visited the Lee’s property on Friday and were able to interact with horses, guinea pigs, a pig, chooks and a cow. We watched Mrs Lee milk her goat. We found out that Mrs Lee gets about 2 litres of milk from her goat each milking. Harry showed us his riding skills and we got to meet Star Dust, a foal that was born on Christmas Eve 2011.

Visiting The Elderly at Kaikoura Hospital

The Pukeko Class went to visit the elderly at the Kaikoura Hospital. We played Housie and took part in a quiz.
We sang songs and gave the people a piece of art that we had drawn of some of the landmarks of Kaikoura.
This visit was to help us understand what the elderly people of Kaikoura want of their community.

Forest Club begins at Suburban School

Last Friday we introduced the Forest Club to about half of the pupils at school.
The Forest school concept was started in Denmark with the aim of teaching children the skills to be successful in the outdoors.
Firstly, Mrs Rogers introduced the tools that we would be using and demonstrated how to be safe. She showed us how to use the hand axe and carry it. This was followed by the saw.
Then it was time to learn the knots that we would need to lash branches together to build two shelters. We learnt the safety and clove hitch knots.
Finally, we headed out to the bike track area to practice what we had learnt. This week we will be completing the walls of the 4 sided shelter and starting to use dead hedging to fill in the sides on each of the shelters.
We are hoping that the shelters that we build will be at Suburban School for the children to enjoy for a number of years.
For the remainder of the term we will be learning how to make a camp fire, mallet and gazzoo. We will also be making sound pictures and identifying species.
