Kaikoura Suburban School planted the 4000th tree on Thursday 26 August.
Trees For Travellers kindly invited the afternoon Pukeko class to plant the 4000th tree at South Bay. The tree was the native Naigo.
We had a great experience and learnt so much!

Whale watching in Kaikoura

The Year 4 students had a wonderful time out with Whale Watch Kaikoura early this week.
The students reflections:
James – it was very cool and I hope that I can go again. I learnt how many different species of whales.
Natalia – It was exciting, I enjoyed it. I learnt how far the whales dived. Thank you.
Hannah – I learnt how deep the ocean floor was from the boat. I learnt about the different whale names. I loved the trip. Thank you Whale Watch Kaikoura.
Allie – I learnt that the whales dive down to the canyon. I loved it, it was fun. Thank you Whale Watch Kaikoura.

Congratulations Senior Inquiry Class!
As a team you have launched a unique community facility to be incredibly proud of. Demand has not quite been as we anticipated from your survey results, but business is steadily increasing. On reflection this week you all highlighted the fact that we need to advertise more effectively with more posters, banners, internet site, location on Goggle Maps, Youtube movie and word of mouth. You have acted on your reflection in a very positive way.
You know that the community needs a facility just like the one that you have had the foresight to create, so even if the profit is missing you are certainly on the right lines to create a long term successful business!

A huge well done to a focused group of girls, Suburban Dragons netball team.
The skill level was tremendous – straight line play, intercepts, chasing loose ball and passing into space.
The girls led from the beginning and managed to pull off a good win: 8 – 3.
Congratulations to Zoe for receiving player of the day. A well deserved recognition.

Game On is now open at Harakeke Mall next to Smith City!

We have PS3’s, Wii’s, XBox360 and PC consoles for one and two player games. Come and have a fantastic time with your mates. You can choose the console that you want to play on and pay for a minimum of half an hour. A list of games that are available for each console will be changed daily, we have great driving, sport, fantasy and fun games like Guitar Hero and Singstar.

Game On is open from 1:30 to 5:30 pm daily from 1st to 15th August – come and make the most of this amazing idea!

It is worth coming down and having a go for your fun and to encourage the Youth Council to keep a youth facility going once we have completed our two week business.

Come and get your Game On!!!!!!

Unfortunately we have a few sick today, so Game On will not open at 1:30pm but will be open from 3:15pm to 5:30pm.

The big red truck!

Blake’s grandad and grandma brought to school their big red truck. The children thought it was cool! ”It was clever how the front of the cab dropped forward and I loved sitting in the cab, ” explained Tiana. ”The truck has to have tall sides to keep the animals safe,” informed Reuben. ” I loved looking at the motor,” Blake said. ”We loved sitting on the bed,” Eli and Xenobia sang together. ”I liked looking inside the cab and the motor,” Oliver explained. ”I liked listening to all the places in NZ the truck visits,” Emma told us. Olivia learnt that the cattle entered at the back of the truck. ”I like it when Blake’s grandad put the passengers chair forward,” explained Jacob.
Fantail class would like to thank Blake’s grandad and nana for bringing the big red truck to school.

After our immersion and learning the skills of running a business the juniors have created a business called Sushi on the Move and the seniors will open a business called Game On.
Sushi on the Move has employed staff to make sushi which will be enjoyed by people within our community.
Game On is a business that will operate in Harakeke Mall where the public will be able to explore and interact with a range of ICT games. There is a cost that is determined by the amount of time you visit.
The seniors have the support of the Youth Trust Council and the Seaward Lions Ladies of Kaikoura.
Once again I thank the staff and students for undertaking a learning pathway that excites and connects with the learning opportunities of our community.

Welcome back to school and a very exciting Term 3!

During the first few weeks of the term we will be concentrating on addition and subtraction in Numeracy, deeper features in our literacy so that we can happily use simile, metaphor and onomatopoeia in reading and writing, we will also work on narratives and relevant items for Inquiry. As always we are working on spelling rules and essential words that we need to know instantly in all literacy activities.

Inquiry is going to be very exciting yet again! The senior “Getting into Business” Inquiry is taking on the theme of Game or Time Zone in which the students aim to run a successful business around technology, games and competition…….Watch this space! Whereas the junior Inquiry will be creating a successful business through the sale of Sushi.

In the next few weeks we also have Orienteering, Student lead conferrence and towards the end of Term the Cross Country event which we will be training towards throughout the term.

Thank you for making sure that we have all the stationery that we need to strive to great heights in our learning and please continue to do the fabulous work in supporting your child with their reading, counting and homework.

Remember if you would like to pop in and see what we are upto, you are always welcome and if you should have any regular free time, we create plenty of draft writing that we would love a little help to publish.

Kaikoura firemen’s visit.

Hold on tight!

On Monday 4 volunteer fireman took time to talk to our students about the importance of smoke alarms in the home, what to do if someone catches on fire and for each child to identify have a safety escape plan at their home. A tip to remember is, if you live in the township a good meeting place is your letterbox.
The students had the chance to feel the weight of a hose on full and 6 lucky students got a ride in the fire engine.
A huge thanks to Mr Bradley, Owen, Todd and Samma. We all think you are amazing and we highly respect what you do for our community.
