Shearwaters have made a movie to enter the Canterbury Biodiversity competition as part of the celebrations this year towards biodiversity awareness. As part of our Inquiry “Getting to know our mountain” we are studying and researching native and introduced species, which is of great interest to all the students. The Shearwater class are particularly interested in the Hutton’s Shearwater and thought they would take this opportunity to do a little further research into this amazing endemic bird.
Enjoy the movie!Hutton’s Shearwater biodiversity entry

Congratulations Senior Inquiry Class!
As a team you have launched a unique community facility to be incredibly proud of. Demand has not quite been as we anticipated from your survey results, but business is steadily increasing. On reflection this week you all highlighted the fact that we need to advertise more effectively with more posters, banners, internet site, location on Goggle Maps, Youtube movie and word of mouth. You have acted on your reflection in a very positive way.
You know that the community needs a facility just like the one that you have had the foresight to create, so even if the profit is missing you are certainly on the right lines to create a long term successful business!
Keep up the great work.

Shearwaters have developed some rather persuasive skills since the beginning of this term as our literacy focus is persuasion. We have been reading various texts meant for all sorts of audiences with a goal to help our own writing on various topics. Shearwaters have been busy convincing classmates that the fiction text they have read is the best, also that they are the best Fyffe Force Learner and that the Hutton Shearwaters should be protected.

This is an example of our persuasive writing by Steffi Burra
I am going to convince you that I am the most amazing Fyffe Force learner in Shearwaters!

I am fun because I can make Ruby and Holly crack up laughing.

You should definetly vote for me because you all know how organised I am! I always put my chair down and I am always ready for school.

You know how brilliant I am at communicating because I always use my words when I am sad or hurt.

I am excellent because I always try my best.

These reasons are why you should vote for me because I am the best Fyffe Force Learner in Shearwaters

Sam G has kindly carved 3 images for our classes here at Kaikoura Suburban School. The images are of the 3 birds of which we have named our classrooms after. This change was made as part of the new curriculum, linking the Kaikoura community with the school’s programmes.
Last year we voted for 3 bird names that we felt were linked to our school. The Pukeko (swamp hen) we see regular waltzing round the immediate paddocks beyond the school field, the Shearwater is the bird we have agreed to sponsor on an annual basis after one of our Year 6 students researched it last year and the Fantail we chose as it links the flora and fauna of Mt Fyffe with us.
Sam is a local artist who we consider one of our ‘experts’ under The Arts curriculum. He carves for a living.
Thank you Sam for our lovely carvings. These will be allocated to each classroom.

On Wednesday 17 2010 we all meet outside R&R Sports to bike to school for Bike Wise month. When we arrived there, there were free goodies for everyone. Once we were all sorted out we were off. We walked our bikes to Ludstone Road then we tackled a hill. Then zoomed down and up another one. Then we were on Mt Fyffe Rd in a flash. Halfway down the road Talyor and I had to stop for a breather. Then after a long bike down Mt Fyffe Rd we finally turned onto Schoolhouse Rd. Then over a couple of bridges. We were cheered on as we entered the gate. We had a race to the car park. We would like to thank all of the parent helpers, R&R Sport and the Seaward Lion ladies and the Kaikoura District Council.
