The squadron leaders spent time sharing stories about the make-up of the Iroquois and expeditions they’ve been involved with while calling into school.
The students were totally in awe of the size and sounds the Iroquois makes.
We thank the team from Ohaka for calling in and hope to see them back real soon.

On 1 December the Year 4,5 & 6’s set off for camp. Our first stop was Smiths Farm Park, Link water. We went for a couple of walks. One to Davies Bay and one to a water fall. The waterfall walk was steep and slippery. We managed to do it and it was worth it because the waterfall was beautiful.

On Dec 2 we went to Bridge Valley, Wakefield, Nelson. We went on a water slide, low ropes, orienteering, cooking damper and flying fox which went across a lake, the parents had a go at it too! There was a huge tramp in the water with a pillow next to it. We all had a go jumping on it. Before we left we did an Iron Man. There were 2 different groups that were versing each other with different activities. Hannah’s team won. For the prize we got a really crazy ride on a jeep. We went on angles and in ditches and going up hills. It was scary and fun at the same time. It was great.

It was a great experience.

Last night, 18 November, we had our Learning Celebration at Donegal House and it started at 6pm.

We started out with some awesome chicken jokes. Hannah S shared her learning by talking about the amazing Hutton Shearwaters. She presented $65 to the Shearwater Trust. We watched the some fascinating chicken videos like Chuck the Chicken Cooking Show, Incubators imovie, Bock bock news and coop building news. Rebecca shared her learning about bellbirds and she handed out some brochures. Neroli then explained how a gas fridge works. Lacey showed us her new invention, an amazing measuring device to measure butterfish, paua, female and male crayfish tails. We finished with the chicken dance.

The whole thing was terribly exciting and very succsessful.

We travelled into our community to find out their points of view as to whether McDonald’s should come to Kaikoura or not?
We surveyed 72 different people from business owners, residents, tourist and school children.
The results told us that 48 people oppose the idea. The main reasons were extra rubbish, enough businesses already, our recycling centre has already enough rubbish, and obesity issues. 22 agreed to the idea. Their reasons were that it was a cheap meal option, a safe place for teenagers to go and it will attract people to stop in Kaikoura and take time to admire our town in the hope they would return at another time. 4 people were undecided.
This completes our research and we wait to see what happens in the future.

Val our Enviroschool teacher came to teach us about the 5 ‘R’s” – REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE , RECOVER and RUBBISH. We sorted our school’s rubbish and found that there was a large amount of waste that can’t be reused or recycled. This waste goes to our landfill, which is filling up real fast!
We discussed ideas and options on how to reduce this from happening. We decided that we would prefer paper wrapping, reusable bags and containers for our food. We identified that glad wrap and chippy packets were the worst culprits.
We did a costing exercise and found that a big bag of chips or crackers or biscuits are more economic to buy and split up and send to school in a plastic container. Food for thought!
