We’ve been writing bio poems about ourselves, we really enjoyed that with lots of creativity. We’ve also been writing poems including personification which is a non human doing a person action eg. the tree waved in the cool breeze. For fitness we’ve been running around and then we’ve been taking our heart beats and pulse. After we had our data we made a stem and leaf graph with our resting pulse and our energetic pulse which was a challenge, but fun.
By fellow Pukekos Allie Miller and James Sutherland.

A responsive text written by James Sutherland on the inter-school T-ball.

On Tuesday the 8th of November at Kaikoura Primary School we had a inter-school T-ball Tournament. Our team was called Suburban Strikers.

The first match was against St Josephs Saints. My team, the Strikers, got off to a good start with Allie achieving a home run! Then later it was my turn to bat. I swung my bat and the softball went far, far away. I scored a home run! The Strikers went on to win the second and third innings 23 – 11.

The second match was a challenge it was against the Kaikoura Crackers. We thought we had it easy, but no way! The star player of the match was Kahn. One little mistake and you were in trouble! The Crackers were too hard, we lost 28-19.

Kaikoura Crunchers were next in line. This match was a very fast paced match, far throws, lots of catches, quick outs and home runs! My highlight of that match was a home run because the opposition backstop dropped the softball. We lost but only by 32-28.

The last match of the day was against the Inlanders. Wow we really set our eyes on a victory. The Strikers had a very practiced combination. Felix and I were in the diamond and Uriah at first base. We won the match 27-21.

I wish I could of got one more match at this amazing event because it was a very enjoyable event.

On Monday 29th of August the Year 4′s and Year 5′s from Kaikoura Suburban School went on a whale watch trip.

First we watched a safety movie so that we were safe.

Next we got on a bus and I sat next to my dad.

Then we got on the boat, I chose a seat to sit on. Then the boat started to move away from shore. Andrea introduced her name to the kids, parents and teachers.
Andrea taught us about whales and what they eat.

Soon we got to go outside the boat. I saw a whale, it dived and I saw its tail, it was beautiful. Then we had to go inside.

Later we saw a big pod of Dusky Dolphins. We got to go outside and see them up close.

Unfortunately lots of people and I got sea sick.

Finally we went to shore. It was fun to see the whales. I learnt that whales eat squid, whales can dive for 45 minutes
and whales make a clicking sound with their noses and an echoing sound to catch their prey.

Thankyou to Kaikoura Whale Watch for letting Kaikoura Suburban School come go on the Whale Watch trip. I think it was a great experience for my first time and I would recommend it to everyone.

Jen, from Enviroschools, and Ralph Hogan came and spoke to the Pukeko class about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling our rubbish to prevent too much residual waste (landfill waste).
We looked at the pyramid of rubbish and identified the important layer, the bottom layer, was to reduce the amount of packaging. We found that by buying in bulk we can reduce our packaging. Often we identified that the packaging could be reused and or recycled.
We kept our rubbish from yesterday and found there was only one piece of rubbish we couldn’t recycle. This was the plastic wrappers that have the silver lining. See photo for examples. The museli bar wrapper at the bottom of the photo we can reuse as it is a clear plastic.

Quotes from the students sharing their new learning:
Allie reflected, “Silver plastic wrappers can’t be recycled or reused. We need to find some without.”
Felix reflected, “Kaikoura allows us to recycle most of our plastic.”
Katie reflected, “Reduce means to buy in bulk to reduce the amount of rubbish and to reduce the cost.”
Hannah H reflected, ” We need to reuse our packaging more eg. plant seedlings, water bottles, food storage..”
James reflected, “Reduce is the most part of the ‘Rubbish pyramid.”
Stacey reflected, “Kaikoura people should be strict with their recycling to prevent our landfills filling up.”

It would be exciting to see all of our rubbish that leaves our school go into the recyclable bins with no rubbish for the landfill!

The senior Pukeko class have been learning about proceduaral text. We have had fun seeing how these are a good text form to learn about kitchen chemistry. These are all the things we have made.

Icecream in a bag, made glue and cheese from milk, fried green eggs by adding the natural juice of a red cabbage to the egg white. The natural juice is an alkaline which changed the egg from white to green.
Over the weekend we have had a hardboiled egg in vinegar. As vinegar is an acid this reacted with the calcium carbonate of the egg and it’s shell. We found that the acid had totally dissolved the shell of the egg and the egg was bouncy.

We have broken into groups to share our own choice of kitchen chemistry.
One of the group made rock candy and that is setting and forming crystals, another group has made a folding egg, another group is going to make a lemonade volcano and another group made a speedy reaction with coke and mintos.

Kitchen chemistry is a cool way of learning about procedural text.
