Our learning celebration – well done to all students.

Posted May 28, 2010

Once again the staff and students proved that they are making a difference with learning, with an excellent performance last night at our Learning Celebration.
I can’t reiterate enough how clever they are with their organisation for the Go Kart Derby  and then 4 days later share their learning of the whole process.
Well done and I think you are amazing.

Luisa and Rodney have made the probability of keeping our swimming pool a WHOLE lot better.
Saturday afternoon the community rallied together participating in an auction that had something for all.  From pledges of cash, money from the auction, mystery envelopes and the ‘hat’ that was passed around we collectively raised over $6500.00.

Congratulations Luisa and on behalf of Kaikoura Suburban School staff, students and community we thank you very much and we are happy to lend you a beanie for the chilly winter days!

Tramping to Mt Fyffe Hut – 1 April 2010

Fantastic Fyffe Force learners

The team

What a special, momentous occasion when 13 very strong, enthusiastic Fyffe Force learners tramped to Mt Fyffe Hut on 1.04.2010.  This tramp was chosen as Mt Fyffe is very symbolic to us as learners.  The mountain, Mt Fyffe,  is the basis of our  journeys path and reaching the hut means we are well and truly on the way to succeed as learners and with adopting the values and  skills one needs for life.
Thanks also to the parents and staff who supported and also met and set their own personal challenges.
The company, weather, environment and atmosphere was truly amazing leaving very special memories for us all.
Congratulations to you all.

Surfing

Dave Lyons Surfing in our playground.

As part of our immersion for Inquiry, Dave Lyons kindly gave up some of his valuable time today and taught us some moves and terms for surfing. Dave showed us how to paddle out, get our balance, stand up and how to fall safely with a wipeout. We had lots of fun practicing moves with him and had a huge pile of questions that he patiently answered. Now it is off to the beach…….I wonder if surfing is as easy on water as it is on land?

3 sleeps to go!

Posted January 30, 2010

Only 3 sleeps to go before we begin another exciting year at Kaikoura Suburban School.  The staff have been working hard and their classrooms are looking terrific.  Thanks so much for all the work you do.
Our school bus and the Ministry bus will be running on Tuesday.  Remember to put your togs in as we will be swimming every day.  Thanks to Lou and Rodney for all their efforts over the holidays with the school pool.
Mr Hurst has been busy clearing the wood from the plantation so we are considering our next steps for this area.  We thank him for all the work he’s done and the way he has supported the school.
We have Board elections coming up at the end of Term 1 so it’s time to consider whether you would like to be part of the school’s governance and supporting the journey of the school who values the student’s needs as paramount.
We have a surprise for our Friday Fun day, which is the first Friday back at school.  Traditionally we have held something special on this day as a welcome back and a chance to catch up with familiar faces and to welcome new staff, students and their families to our school.  We will inform you of the plans as of next week.
The staff have a Teacher Only Day on Monday so if there are any concerns or questions please don’t hesitate to ring or call in.
We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday 2 February.

Happy New Year

Posted January 11, 2010

Happy New Year to you all.  The Spencer’s were very fortunate to spend time in the Marlborough Sounds over the Christmas period.  We spent lots of time kayaking, swimming and resting.
Saturday 9 January was a very special day for one of the school’s past teachers, Rachel Roberts now Mrs Rachel McLay.  Rachel and  Wesley were married and what a special day it was for them with their families and friends.
As we’re half way through the holiday break I hope you’re all feeling relaxed and rested ready for another amazing year at school.  The staff are busy planning and preparing the school for action.  School will commence on 2 February at 9am.  Enjoy the last few weeks and we look forward to seeing you all soon.
